Well...
yes, I totally agree with the "you get what you pay for" motto. These staff were getting around $12 an hour, from what I could gather (it seemed like we had a different staffing agency supplying staff at each show). I know I wouldn't get out of bed for $12 an hour... 
 
I would take issue with "promo staff only get away with what you let them." When you are the sole manager with multiple tents in different locations plus individual wandering samplers, you come to the existential realization that you are only one person who can only be in one place at any one given time (especially in a large concert venue).  
 
I've done the whole direct hire/recruiting onsite when you are desperate for staff; it works for replacing one or two people but, finding an entire team of staff at a drug/boozed-filled concert is pretty fantastic (as in a fantasy). 
 
Indeed, most of us do like to tell stories. When I start a tour with a new partner, the first two weeks is mostly us telling our event stories. This one is my ringer; I've got a lot of stories but, this one is my best. That's why I say "TOP THAT!!!" Everyone tries to one-up your story with theirs but, no one can beat this one (that I've met).
